FAQ – Saskatoon Wado Kai Karate Club

Wado Kai is a traditional karate style incorporating punches, kicks, blocks to protect oneself from attackers. Our classes include activities such as perfecting basic techniques, working on Katas (combinations of techniques which are designed to be an imaginary fight), working with partners in either 2-step or freestyle Kumite (fighting) and many other drills and activities to hone the students skills.

Our classes are set up for students 8 years old to any age. The youths from 8 to 12 are in one class and the 13 and older students are in the Adult class.

It is not necessary to be in perfect shape to start learning karate. Many students find that the workouts help them to get into better shape by increasing their cardio workout, increasing their flexibility and also their strength because many of the stances will strengthen and tone your muscles. It is a great “whole body” workout but it also challenges your mind, which running on a treadmill does not offer!

The fee’s for the Karate class are set by the YMCA as all the instruction is done on a volunteer basis. Other fee’s students have to pay are the yearly SWKKF Association fee and purchase of uniforms and/or equipment.

The basic fees are as follows:

Youth Class Members: FREE Non-Members: $110 + tax (Sept – Jan)

Adult Class Members: FREE Non-Members: Student $118+ tax (Sept – Jan)

Adult $150+ tax (Sept – Jan)

SWKKF Association Fee - YEARLY association fee of $40 per student collected by the Sensei’s approximately 2 months after your first session of the new year.

The basic karate gi’s cost $40 and are ordered approximately 1 month into each session (i.e., October and February). Equipment such as hand pads and foot pads are not mandatory but range from $15 - $25 a set depending on style if you wish to purchase them.
